If you haven’t heard the name, The Gumshoe Strut, a few visuals may come to mind: a wily detective, an old school dance move, or, for the literalist, a gob of gum stuck to the bottom of one’s shoe. Add rapper, producer and manic-depressive to the equation and you get a picture of an artist unlike any other.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Gumshoe Strut aka BeeJay Groce has spent the past ten years carving his legacy with his own version of hip hop. He was raised as an only child by a single mother, relying heavily on community programming to find amusement. As an adult he has spent a number of years devoted to community programming. He played a pivotal role in the shaping of Winnipeg’s underground hip hop scene in the early 2000′s, and in 2005, pioneered one of Winnipeg’s first hip hop workshops for inner-city youth.
Musically, he has always maintained an honest and personal approach. His delivery is powerful and passionate, while his lyrics create vivid imagery, and his beats evoke a range of emotions with their marching rhythms and obscure melodies. His live show is energetic and thought provoking. On stage, Gumshoe’s voice stretches beyond its recorded incarnations, and his mannerisms engage audiences.
Prior to his new EP Too Long In The Tooth (www.marathonofdope.com), The Gumshoe Strut released 4 solo projects and appeared on numerous records by Peanuts & Corn Records. He has headlined tours across Western Canada, and shared the stage with acts such as The Coup, Devin The Dude, Swollen Members, Buck 65 and Maestro Fresh Wes, to name a few.
